Nurturing Diversity & Inclusivity @ Work

February 26, 2021by admin6791

Riding the wave of globalization and socio-cultural evolution, diversity and inclusivity has claimed centre stage in work and organizational culture. And while it can be a daunting task to incorporate the same in everyday work life, here are little things you can do to nurture a more diverse and inclusive workforce for years to come.

Inclusive Hiring Practices

The first step towards creating a more diverse team and workspace requires eliminating discriminatory hiring practices. Start by auditing the current hiring process and identifying any potential bottlenecks and discrepancies. List both the strengths and challenges of your hiring processes, pick a metric to improve upon and aim towards reducing the potential biases and increasing diversity in sourcing, screening, and shortlisting candidates.

Mission Diversity

It is crucial to unite towards the common goal and nurture an ideologically inclusive mindset in the workforce. It can be cultivated by continually educating the team about the importance of diversity and inclusivity to help internalize the message, rather than just enforcing or indoctrinating it without giving them the space to understand, accept and make a reasonable choice.

Inclusive Workplace Model

The workspace should celebrate every member’s individuality, fostering a sense of belonging for employees from diverse backgrounds and experiences, where they feel supported and not unheard or invisible. Little things like creating a space for a breastfeeding mother to pump her breast milk, setting up a meditation or prayer room, encouraging language diversity etc., makes them feel valued and motivates them to bring their best selves to work.

May Every Voice Feel Welcome, Heard, & Respected

Employees often feel that their opinions and unique talents are not appropriately acknowledged or valued, thus making them feel unheard or invisible. They need to feel free to express themselves – feeling included, appreciated and safe to voice their concerns and diverse perspectives without the fear of victimization. We must create a non-biased, non-discriminatory space that encourages open communication, allowing the members to feel connected to the company and its people, regardless of their age, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, cultural background etc.

Address Gender Pay Inequality

Gender pay equity is an essential factor in determining a company’s growth, inclusivity, and employee satisfaction. It is important to open a dialogue for employees to voice their take on the same while also sharing some of the company’s data points around compensation to breed trust and transparency. This will help promote healthy and transparent communication while imparting significant insight from the employees’ perspective to create a strategy committed to bridging the pay gap.

To sum it up, improved diversity and inclusive practices help both the employees and the company thrive together, creating a shared space for nurturing open conversation and diverse perspectives. Taking these baby steps paves the way for greater trust and employee retention while building a multi-faceted dynamic workforce to cater to the industry’s greatest challenges!
